Palm Springs Tram History

Opened to the Public:
Year built in, completed in September 1963.

Since opening in 1963, more than 13 million people have made the trip to the top of the mountain in the Palm Springs Tram's rotating cable cars ride! Before opening in 1963, the only way to the top of the Tram was by hiking several hours from Idyllwild, Ca.

A vintage cable car displayed at the Tram entrance.

The Tram's Cable Cars:
Featuring two 80-passenger rotating enclosed cars providing breathtaking views

The Trip and The Elevation:
Valley Station - 2,643'
Mountain Station - 8,516'

The Palm Springs Tram's Architecture:
Both tramway stations (the valley floor station and the mountain-top lodge) were designed by notable mid-century modern architects!

The Palm Springs Tramway Valley Station, constructed between 1949—1963, was designed by architects Albert Frey & Robson C. Chambers.

The Tramway Mountain Station, built in 1961, was designed by E. Stewart Williams.

Distance Traveled to top:
Approximately 12,800' with vertical ascent of 5,873' - 15 minutes travel time one way

Interesting Tram Visitor Info:

Helpful Tip: It's much cooler at the top of the Palm Springs Tram, so consider taking a jacket with you. In fact, it's often 20-30 degrees cooler at the mountain station (8,516 feet) than at the valley station.

The ride to the top of the tram is two and one half miles from the valley station, up Chino Canyon, 15 minutes travel time each way - with breathtaking views stretching as much as 50 miles in all directions as your car rotates to provide optimal views.

Five towers support four 1-7/8" steel cables as well as four hauling cables, two auxiliary cables and a communications cable.

The first tower is the tallest at 214' high; Tower Number Four is the shortest at 56 1/2' high. The weight of steel in the five towers totals 263 tons; the weight of the 11 cables totals 330 tons. The maximum span between towers is 3,455' between Towers 3 and 4.

The Palm Springs Tram is often referred to as one of the 'wonders of the engineering world' because the towers supporting the cables and the tram cars ascending the mountain were erected with the assistance of helicopters more than 48 years ago, first opening in 1963.

Palm Springs Tram Hours:
Cars depart at least every half hour from 10 a.m., Monday-Friday; 8 a.m. weekends and holiday periods. Last car up is 8 p.m. with the last car down at 9:45 p.m.

Tram Location & Information:

Tram Open Daily including holidays! The Palm Springs Tram Valley Station, where tickets may be purchased daily, is located on the north edge of Palm Springs.

Directions from Palm Springs: Take Tramway Road West from Highway 111, the Tram station is located west on Tramway Road, 3 1/2 miles up the hill at One Tram Way, Palm Springs, Ca 92262.

The Tram is rated as the No: 1 attraction and is a must do if you're in the area. We've been lucky enough to have done it several times and it's great every time. Whether you want to travel up and spend the day hiking in the wilderness or just look at the stunning views over a cocktail and /or meal, the experience of riding the tram is all part of the trip.

William P. | Haverfordwest Pe | January 20, 2012

A must see if you are coming with kids. Go up to Mt. San Jacinto. We've been several times over the years and it is always fun. Dress warmly as you are going to 8000 feet and the weather is very different than in PS!

The aerial tram is a great activity right in Palm Springs. The tram ride up is a lot of fun and there is great hiking once you get to the top of the mountain. Great restuarant at the mountain top too!

Kristen E. | Glendale CA | May 24, 2011

A great way to see a view of the area and to escape the heat. My only complaint is that they packed too many people into the tram, otherwise it was very nice.

Toni G. | Mission Viejo CA | May 15, 2011

Fun fun fun

Per Z. | Los Angeles CA | May 11, 2011

Great views from up at the top. The floor in the tram rotates, so everyone gets to view all directions

Debbie H. | Prior Lake MN | April 27, 2011

Absolutely worth the money. Hiking trails and overlooks of the valley were spectacular. I wish I had allotted more time to spend up there.

Jeffrey F. | Minneapolis MN | April 26, 2011

all-around great experience, desert to snow in 10 minutes

Rodney L. | Westport CT | April 22, 2011

Great experience, views are amazing and the cool mountain air is refreshing on a hot day!

It was 102 in the valley and 70 at the top of the tram. My 2 year old built a snow man. It was great fun.

Damien H. | Lake Oswego OR | April 9, 2011

it was an unforgettable experience

Armen M. | Glendale CA | March 29, 2011

It was fun and a great experience to go from the valley and in 10 minutes be standing in snow at the top of the mountain. If we were to go again it would be in the summer to enjoy the outdoor trails at the top.

Robert M. | Oakville ON | March 28, 2011

The Tram is a must do activity while in Palm Springs. It's amazing to feel the temperature difference after a short 10 minute ride and the views are outstanding. Make sure you take time to enjoy a meal at the outside tables.

Craig D. | New Haven IN | March 28, 2011

The food at the top was pretty bad - I wouldn't recommend buying the tickets with food in advance. There wasn't much to do at the top, so it's really not much of an event and kind of expensive for the short tram ride up.

Cindy R. | West Chester OH | March 20, 2011

It's always good, but sure not as beautiful or available in the winter. I like to hike and there isn't much up there during the winter. The food was good.

Gloria And Douglas S. | Bemidji MN | March 13, 2011

a must when in Palm Springs

Richard W. | Hampshire IL | March 3, 2011

Great views of Palm Springs. Don't take the Tram on a weekend. It is too busy to enjoy.

It was a beautiful, sunny day, not a cloud in the sky. At the very top, it felt like summer!

Nancy A. | Campbell CA | December 15, 2010

It was so much fun (and a little scary) riding up the tram. The view was amazing. Once we got to the top, we walked down to the trails and did a little sledding (there wasn't much snow, but we were able to have a good time nonetheless). We did the ride 'n lunch for a group, so we ate at one of the restaurants...The food was ok, but the view more than made up for it.

Young K. | Cerritos CA | December 7, 2010

Both activities are enjoyed by everyone.

Minh N. | San Diego CA | December 7, 2010

So much fun and gorgeous!

Gorgeous outing. Take a lot of pictures. Plus refreshing when it is over 100 degrees at the mountain base.

Roger C. | Bothell WA | October 28, 2010

Do it.

Paula W. | Oceanside CA | October 28, 2010

The tram ride and museum at the top was excellent. The 360 degree turning of the tram allowed everyone some time for photos. It would have been even better if we could have taken a hike that would have given a view of Palm Springs.

Les J. | Edmonton AB | October 26, 2010

There are not many places in the world where you can move from 100 degrees to 1 foot of snow in twenty minutes. Fantastic views from the top and beautiful fresh air.

We enjoyed getting out of the heat for a while and getting a great view of the desert area.

Susan V. | Redondo Beach CA | June 29, 2010

The aerial tram must be experienced by anyone. The ride is fun and the mountain trails were enjoyable to explore.

Trish W. | Cottleville MO | June 23, 2010

Great hike and picnic lunch.

Craig P. | Stratford WI | June 22, 2010

The Palm Springs Arial Tramway is the coolest attraction in the region. Always breathtaking and unique.

Daniel H. | West Hollywood CA | May 5, 2010

the view was amazing, kinda chilli though.

Aarika P. | Wildomar CA | April 28, 2010

The grandkids absolutely LOVED the tram and so did we.

Lisa R. | San Mateo CA | April 13, 2010

A must see!

Kim H. | Eden Prairie MN | April 6, 2010

If, I were to experience this again, which I think I will, I would make a day of it. The weather was a big factor..it was beautiful! 85 at the base and 60 on top. The sun really warmed the lovely fresh air. I would plan a hike ( dress appropriately) carry water, etc. etc. I would make a reservation at the restaurant and end the day with a few glasses of wine and , hopefully, and good meal. Sounds like a perfect day, doesn't it?

Richard C. | San Francisco CA | March 27, 2010

My son, a typical hard-to-impress 12-year-old, was absolutely thrilled with the tram. He talked about it for the rest of the trip and is still sharing pictures and memories of it with his friends. We loved it, too. It's hard to beat a day that includes sunbathing and four feet of snow. Pretty good glass of wine available up there, as well.

Mary M. | Dallas TX | March 24, 2010

Great, easy way to experience the mountaintop.

Kerry W. | Swampscott MA | March 21, 2010

only 20 min to snow, eating some dinner, so going down to summer again... palm springs air museum are fantastic too...

Fred R. | Minnesund AK | March 11, 2010

This was the main attraction everyone wanted to see, and it was worth the price. The only drawback was that we ate in the cafeteria area at the top and the food was not all that great and the prices were high. The gift shops were good!

Cynthia M. | Quincy CA | March 11, 2010
